Human Development Report 1995: Gender and Human Development

The Report analyses the progress made in reducing gender disparities in the past few decades, highlighting the wide and persistent gap between women's expanding capabilities and limited opportunities. It introduces two new measures for ranking countries on a global scale by their performance in gender equality (GEM) and (GDI), and analyses the under-valuation and non-recognition of women's work. It offers a five-point strategy for equalizing gender opportunities in the decade ahead.

Gender Equality and Development

Our work is guided by the premise that the promotion of gender equality is both a means for development and an end for the enjoyment of human rights by women and men.On the basis of research and analysis, the long term vision for the Gender and Equality Development section is to inform and influence policy making and implementation by creating awareness about how social structures are gendered and affect the attainment of equality between men and women, boys and girls. Through advocacy and networking with civil society organizations, opinion leaders, and decision-makers, it is expected that gender equality and access to and enjoyment of women's rights will be furthered.
